Readers of my blog know that I absolutely LOVE food. My time with the military and the Department of Defense allowed me a chance to travel extensively throughout the US and abroad. Usually one of the first things I will do is make contact with a local and ask them what and where they eat. As a result, I have had some delicous meals. From Chicken Jose's in Puerto Rico to "pancakes" from a Muslim stand in Singapore.
The absolute worst meal, actually didn't taste bad, but smelled terrible (to me). That meal was Pad Thai. I was on a trip to Seattle and I noticed that there were plenty of Vietnamese & Thai restaurants. So I tried it. Tasted pretty good, but I could never get over the smell.
What is the absolute Worst Meal You have eaten and where did you eat it?

I love Pud Thai. Then maybe some people can make it so it is bad. What is in that top can? Looks like the foot from the creature of the black lagoon. Worst food I ever watched anyone eat was some sort of moving worm like thing in Korea.
Pickled Pigs Feet. One Bite, One Time and that was plenty!
And this from a guy who really isn't a very picky eater!
Any green vegetable. It's a texture thing. Yup, I AM a picky eater. Not that that compares to your Pud Thai. The bravest I got in Thailand was fried noodles!!!!!
Man those are some gross pictures. I don't know what the worst food I have ate is....I would not touch that stuff in the pictures.
I'm Jewish and for some reason am told that I should love liver. I've tried liver over 30 ways and have concluded 30 times that I can't stand the stuff!
Aside from the taste, just the thought of something that strains the bad out of a person and you're eating it doesn't sit well with me either.
When I was in the Middle East it seemed like we had an unending supply of okra and we used to eat it boiled (ick), the other thing we seemed to have an unending supply of was spam and canned corned beef. One night we had spam stroganoff and we also ate a lot of corned beef hash. Now, I can't even walk by the cans in the aisle at the grocery store.

Leander,
Wow that looks terrible, What is in the can?

Hey Jeffrey, the liver thing is totally understandable. As a college grad with considerable physiology and anatomy in my background, why would ANYONE ever want to eat the worst organ in the body...it's the trashcan of the body and everything yucky that the body has no idea what else to do with goes to the liver! YUCK!
Boy -- I don't like anything which has eye or which is slimmy. I think there are plenty of other things to eat. I stay away from anything like those types of things in your pictures.
(PENUT BUTTER CHICKEN MOLE.....YUCK, YUCK, YUCK!!!!!)
LOOKS DON'T COUNT!
Ingredients:
2 pounds chicken tenders or chicken breast, cut into chunks
1 medium onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 (14oz) can chicken broth
1 (14.5oz) can diced tomatoes w/ jalapenos
1/4 cup creamy natural peanut butter w/ salt
2t chili powder
2T unsweetened cocoa powder
1/4t cinnamon
1T honey
Steve - I have tried pad thai, several places...same smell :). I have no clue whats's in the top can, but I aint eatin it
Ron -I hear ya with the pickle pigs feet. I don't like pigs feet that much anyway. Have you ever tried BBQ pig feet?
Ellie - I love the green veggies...but i understand your pain :)
Never tried the feet BBQ'd but never had a BBQ dish that I didn't like so that one is a toss up!
I love food, so can't remember the food itself being "the worst". My worst eating experience was in France. I bought some cherries at a stand to eat on the train. I was eating them and then noticed little maggots crawling on them AFTER I had eaten MANY.
Still makes my skin crawl just thinking about it.
Jeff - I grew up eating liver. I have to say that I have a preference for pork liver (cuz, that's what my dad liked). I must say that I dont eat liver much these days and would never cook it. I didn't know that being Jewish had some connection with liking liver :) Ya learn something new everyday.
WHO ORDERED LIVER? PICK IT UP!
WHATS IN THE CAN???
I'm told that its what Atlantic Herring looks like in Russia. Not sure...but it looked pretty bad to me
Okay, what ever is in the can is pretty scary. I can not recall something that was really gross that I ate. I am a picky eater so I wont just try anything. I think the following items would be gross (have not tried them though)
- Cows Tongue
- Menudo (I hear it has something to do with intestins... however you spell that word)
Neither of those things sound good to me.Leandra - A relative who I knew was not a great cook prepared a meal for my husband and I. I was trying to be polite but I just couldn't eat it. Boiled pork with the skin and it had the hair on it. It has been about 25 years and it still gives me the chills
Jennifer- Isn't boiled pork supposed to have hair on it? ROFLMAO?
John - My granddad on my fathers side used to like tongue....I think i will skip that one too. I dont know about menudo, but here's a recipe just in case you want to try it
A large saucepan (see note below)
1 calf's foot (about 1 to 1 1/2 pounds)
2 pounds honeycomb tripe
1 large onion
3 cloves garlic, peeled
6 peppercorns
2 teaspoons salt, or to taste
4 quarts of water
A comal or griddle
3 large chiles anchos
A spice grinder
A large chile poblano, peeled or 2 canned, peeled green chiles
The calf's foot
1/2 cup canned hominy (1 pound) drained (see note below)
Salt as necessary
1 scant teaspoon oregano
Have the butcher cut the calf's foot into four pieces. Cut the tripe into small squares. Put them into the pan with the rest of the ingredients. Cover with water and bring to a boil. Lower the flame and simmer uncovered for about 2 hours, or until the tripe and foot are just tender but not too soft. Meanwhile, toast the chilies well. Slit them open and remove the seeds and veins from the chile poblano, cut it into strips, and add to the meat while it is cooking. Remove the pieces of calf's foot from the pen, and when they are cool enough to handle, strip off the fleshy parts. Chop them roughly and return them to the pan.
Add hominy and continue cooking the menudo slowly, still uncovered, for another 2 hours.
Add salt as necessary. Sprinkle with oregano and serve (see note below).
This amount is sufficient for 7 or 8 people. It should be served in large, deep bowls with hot tortillas and small dishes of chopped chile serranos, finely chopped onion and wedges of lime for each person to help himself, along with Salsa de Tomate Verde Cruda to be eaten with tortillas.
Hi Leander,
Does my own food count? When I was young I was trying to make a lemon chiffon pie from my Grandmother's recipe book. What I didn't understand was that the dotted line she drew dividing the ingredients meant that everything BELOW the line was for the CRUST. OMG - What a mess! I literally added the crust to the filling and the "thing" took on a life of its own. It was something out of horror movie like "The Blob" or "The Thing." As it thickened it became something like rubber and clung to the edges of the pot - I couldn't even get it out of the pot. In any case, we didn't eat it. But I'm sure if we had it would have qualified in the top-ten of worst meals.
RUTHMARIE - I can hardly stay on my chair right now I am laughing so hard. In my mind, I can see the scene from the little rascals when they tried to bakc a cake and it exploded in the oven. But dont feel bad. I know you were trying to create something new....pie and crust all in one....lol. I have made those same mistakes trying to follow my granny's recipe's. I never could get the biscuits right :)
Have a great day
Leander
Leander, Not a picky eater. My wife says, "Thank God". She is WAY too modest about her cooking. I've gained 25 lbs since the wedding seven years ago, so she must be ok. To answer your question, beets. I just don't like 'em. Another is eel, as in some kinda sushi that a girl had in the office. One bite lasted the rest of the day. I still remember how greasy it was. This is one I never had, never will if I know about it beforehand - snake.
BTW, the Chitlin' Strut is in SC in Salley every year. All the fried hog intestines that you care to eat. Y'all come on and see us!
Salley, SC - Salley Chitlin' Strut Festival
I didn't actually eat it because the smell was more than enough to make me sick. Literally. In Iceland they eat rotten shark meat. I'm not kidding. There are two ways to prepare it. 1 is to dig a hole, line it with rocks, lay out the shark meat, cover it back up with dirt, then dig it up in 6 months and eat it. The other way is to put the shark meat in a bucket of whey for 6 months and then it's ready.
Apparently it was a way to cure the meat without refrigeration???? I don't know how that works...
Charlie - I have eaten Chitlins before, but they are far from my favorite food. I usually have them on new years day for good luck :). Funny that you don't like beets...my wife loves them. I guess I do too. I also dont mind eel in the sushi....but you gotta be careful. One piece of bad sushi will ruin your impression for life :)
Jared - I don't think i could ever eat the rotted shark meat. I brought a piece of shark one time and it was starting to go bad. The smell was enough to make me barf. I can imagine what is smelled like 6 months later. In High School a korean friend introduced me to kim-chi which was burried in the backyard for 6 months. I liked that :)

Everthing my Mother In Law Cooked, She's home with the Lord now, as she's the only person I ever met who could burn Jiffy Pop Popcorn.
Hey Cameron,
At least now she doesn't to worry about cooking. Some people just dont have the gift for cooking...lol. I do pretty good...but i have been known to burn jiffy pop too :)
Have a great day

The "egg shoot" of a chicken in the middle of the jungles of Nicaragua. I didn't actually eat it though. I pleaded stuffed and the next poor sap got it. LOL What we believed to be the heart was in the same bowl. After that the days of unseasoned rice & beans and yucca root looked pretty good!
Hmmm....suddenly craving a snack.....
